On May 26th, MSPP President Terri Cranmer, MSPP engineers and Spanish Language students from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri set out on a trip that would change their lives and the lives of the 122 students that attend the primary school in the community of Virginia in Guatemala. The students and two faculty members from the college traveled to Guatemala as soon as summer break began. They spent two weeks in Antigua studying Spanish and visiting popular sites in the country. They ended their trip with 4 days of service work in the community.
In spite of the extreme heat, the students, working with community members accomplished more than we had anticipated. Thanks to the generous donation made by the Joseph and Catherine Johnson Family Foundation we were able to paint all of the classrooms, add a new roof to the school building and the school kitchen and supply the school with the funds needed to build a new stove for the school kitchen. After hard days of painting and repair work the students even found time at the end of each day to play soccer with the children.
